Communal clash claims three lives in Abuja

Not less than three people lost their lives in a brawl that took place between indigenes of Abuja and Hausa community in Gwarimpa 3rd Avenue on Monday, April 24.

According to an eyewitness, the clash, which started on Saturday was ignited when a group of Hausa youths, who reportedly deal in illicit drugs, made an unsuccessful attempts to break into the residence of the councillor of the ward and cart away his belongings.

Worried about the dastardly move, the indigenous people quickly rose against the Hausa youths.

According a source, the disagreement eventually claimed the lives 9f three people, with several others injured, and cars vandalised.

On Saturday night, it took the intervention of the security forces to temporarily restore normalcy in the community.

The clash, however, later continued on Monday.

An eyewitness said, “I was at home when I heard the shattering of several glasses and people screaming outside.

“When I looked out the window, I saw a group of young men attacking motorists and buildings while chasing anyone in sight.

“They were armed and dangerous,” said Mr. Mohammed, a resident of the area.

Another resident, who didn’t want his name mentioned, said: “The situation was very tense, and we were all afraid for our lives.

“We heard that about three people had been killed, and there was chaos everywhere.”

As at the time of filing this report, the police have yet to issued any official statement.

Meanwhile, residents of the area are calling for peace and thereby imploring the warring fellows to shun violence, while security personnel wade in the matter.
