Former Senator representing Kaduna Central Senatorial District, Shehu Sani, on Wednesday, has defended the Vice President-elect, Kashim Shettima, saying the former Governor of Borno State committed no offence for obtaining Senatorial form for 2023 general election.
The immediate past Governor of Borno was alleged of obtaining expression of interest and nomination forms to vye for senate before his nomination as running mate to Ahmed Bola Tinubu.
His alleged double nomination has been a talk of the town among various political commentators with the accusers dragging him to the Supreme Court.
Expressing his opinion in a press release he signed on Wednesday, May 29 and made available to newsmen in Abuja, Shehu Sani referred to a similar development, maintaining that the Senate President, Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan contested for the presidential election and re-contested to represent Yobe North Senatorial in the February 25 general elections, which he eventually won.
The lawmaker further stressed that Godswill Akpabio, who is a senator-elect, awaiting inauguration on June 13, also took part in the the presidential election, claimed that Kashim Shettima case is not an exception.
Sani was full of hope that the Supreme Court would rule in favour of senator Shettima.
He said: “What was good for Ahmed Lawan and Akpabio is good for Shettima.
“I don’t expect the Supreme Court to rule against the double nomination.
“No Nigerian should be denied the right and privilege of seeking another office if he fails to get one.”
The political atmosphere in the camp of the All Progressives Congress, APC, is tense as to what the verdict of the apex court would be on Friday, May 26.
Senator Sani has been a serial critic of the president-elect, Bola Ahmed Tinubu prior and aftermath the general elections held on February 25, 2023. And he has been at a loggerheads with the outgoing Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai.
