EPL to get five Champions League slots next season

The English Premier League could be on the brink of making another history, as five teams could make it into the Champions League next season.

UEFA has proposed a change in the competition’s format for the 2024/2025 season.

The proposal will see 36 teams participate in the European championship in a ‘Swiss league’ style.

With the change, an additional slot will be awarded to the two countries whose teams perform best across all UEFA competitions.

To attract the additional slot, the English clubs must be one of the top two performances across the Champions League, Europa League, and Europa Conference League.

“We will likely only know when that fifth spot will come into play for the UCL towards the end of the season, when the geographical spread of the participating clubs in the latter stages of UEFA competitions is known,” a Premier League statement said.

Normally, the top four clubs qualify for the Champions League.
