The European Union, EU, has condemned the killings of Dias and Guambe, calling for a thorough and transparent investigation to ensure those responsible face the wrath of the law.

In a statement, the EU emphasized, “In a democracy, there is no place for politically motivated killings.”

Mozambique is awaiting the official nationwide election results, set to be announced on October 24.

Mondlane, who contested the ruling Frelimo party that has governed Mozambique since its independence 49 years ago, declared victory shortly after polling.

However, he has accused Frelimo of electoral fraud as the party claims to be leading in the vote count, and he has called for protests on Monday.
