A fire outbreak has destroyed a private male lodge popularly known as Binji Hostel at the Usmanu Dan Fodiyo University, (UDUS), Sokoto State.
The hostel, which located within the school premises, is a 500-room lodge belonging to a private investor.
According Ibrahim Abdulqadir, a 200 level student of Islamic Studies Department of the university, who spoke to EVENTNG, the inferno which erupted around 2pm, on Friday was caused by an abrupt electric discharge in one of the rooms.
He further said, he and other fellow students were on their way from the Friday Prayer when they stumbled across the ugly incident and they joined other patriotic students in quenching the fire but its intensity was beyond their efforts as they enlisted the intervention of the state’s Fire Service to calm the situation.
Abdulqadir revealed that the arrival of the Fire service made no significant difference as about thirty five rooms had already been razed by the fire, leaving certificates and other valuables belonging to students most of whom were not around irreparably damaged.
He disclosed that students were embittered over the irredeemable loss of their properties especially their certificates as the presence of the Sokoto State fire service was not enough to salvage deadly occurrence.
