An erstwhile deputy governor of Kogi State, Yomi Awoniyi, has defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Awoniyi had last week informed the leadership of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state of his intention to resign his membership of the party.
The new decampee was officially received into APC at the party’s national headquarters on Tuesday in Abuja.
Reacting after defection, the former Kogi State deputy governor said the state politics is characterized by complexities and challenges.
He praised Governor Bello for putting the ruling party in order in the state despite various challenges.
He said: “I served as the Deputy Governor of Kogi State between 2011 and 2015. I know the state very well, and I can tell you that the current governor has done exceptionally well in terms of leadership and good governance. His humility is unmatched, and his ability to unite the people is remarkable.”
Awoniyi was deputy governor of Kogi State from 2011 to 2015 during Captain Idris Wada’s administration.
While reacting to the development, Governor Yahaya Bello described Yomi Awoniyi as a “big fish”, maintaining that his defection to the APC was significant.
