The military arm of the Palestinian people, Hamas confirmed on Friday that its leader, Yahya Sinwar, was killed by the Israeli military in Gaza, a day after Israel announced his death.
According to a video broadcast by Al Jazeera, Khalil al-Hayya, a senior Hamas official based in Qatar expressed their sadness of the fallen of their leader.
“We mourn our great leader and martyred brother, Yahya Sinwar, Abu Ibrahim.” said Al-Hayya
Sinwar became Israel’s most-wanted figure after leading the deadly October 7, 2023 attack, which resulted in the highest number of Israeli casualties in the country’s history.
Al-Hayya also declared that Hamas would not release the Israeli hostages captured during the attack until Israel halts its military operations in Gaza and frees Palestinian prisoners.
He emphasized that Sinwar’s killing would only strengthen Hamas’ resolve, comparing him to other slain leaders of the group.
