Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State said he won the 2019 and 2023 gubernatorial elections because the Nigerian Army was apolitical.
Makinde said this when the Chief of Army Staff, Major-General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, visited him at his office at the Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan on Tuesday.
Ths City Gazette recalled that Makinde won the 2019 election and was re-elected in 2023 for the second term on the platform of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
He continued that the Army was professional in its conduct during the 2019 governorship election.
The governor gave assurance that his administration wouldn’t cease to maintain a cordial relationship with the force.
“We are glad that you brought the celebration to Ibadan. In South-West Nigeria, Oyo State is actually the biggest in terms of land mass.
“We will play our part and contribute to the activities of the Nigerian Army in the state and deepen the cooperation for mutually beneficial activities.
He furthered that the removal of fuel subsidy is having a telling effect on the economy, thereby encouraging the
Nigerian Army not to be discouraged by the situation in the country.
Lagbaja had earlier said that the reason for the visit was to inform the governor of the Army’s 160th anniversary celebration holding in the state.
