The Ilorin Emirate Professors’ Association (IEPA), during its 4th Annual General Meeting held on Monday at the African People’s Hall, Onikanga, Ilorin, the Kwara State capital elected new executive members.
In his opening address, the pioneer chairman of the association, Professor Sulyman Alege Kuranga said the group has achieved a lot within the few years of its establishment, thereby boasting that the academic body which took off with just 50 members has recorded a meteoric rise in its membership.
The don, therefore, stated that IEPA currently has about 125 registered professors across various universities within and outside Nigeria.
Speaking earlier, the former Chief Medical Director, University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital paid tribute to the late Vice Chancellor of Kwara State University, Professor Muhammed Mustapha Akanbi SAN, whose unwavering effort, according to Prof. Kuranga, is responsible for the survival of the association.
He furthered that IEPA has constituted a Board of Trustees under the tutelage of the first professor of Ilorin extraction, Professor Saka Nurudeen.
Highlighting some of its accomplishments, the medical doctor stated that IEPA has “built functional collaborations” with both institutions and individuals with the Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-gambari as its Grand patron.

While delivering his lecture, themed: “Community Service by Ilorin Emirate Professors: Opportunities and Challenges”, the guest lecturer, one-time Vice Chancellor, University, Professor Abdulganiyu Ambali, admonished the academicians to brace themselves up for the expectations that accompany the title of professorship, warning that their actions and inactions would either attractive public backlash or praise.
Professor Ambali also implored the academic veterans to give back to the society as they would inevitably be faced with series of demands and challenges.
He, however, charged the erudite minds to endeavor to strike a balance between academic and political lives.
Highlights of the event include the award of Fifty Thousand Naira (N50,000) to two qualified undergraduates from each of the Local Government Areas constituting the Ilorin Emirate.
The recipients were selected across various universities in the country.
For his part, the All Progressives Congress(APC), Kwara Central Senatorial candidate, Saliu Mustapha thanked the organisers for finding him worthy of the invitation as he announced the donation of the sum of Ten Million Naira (10,000,000) to the association and Two Million Naira (N2,000,000) to the undergraduates.
The second half of the Annual General Meeting, saw the emergence of Former CMD, Ilorin General Hospital, Prof. Abdulfatahi Olokooba as the new President of IEPA; Prof. Abiodun Amuda Kannike, Vice President; Prof. Mubarak Sanni, Financial Secretary; Prof. Ibrahim Laaro Abubakar, PRO; Prof. Ibrahim Adam, Legal Adviser; Prof. Binta Sulyman, General Secretary; Abdullahi Alanamu, Assistant General Secretary and Prof. Abdulraheem I.S, Welfare Officer.
