Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has pardoned 104 inmates serving various terms in different prisons across the State.

Sanwo-Olu acted on the recommendation of the State Advisory Council.

According to the State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Moyosore Onigbanjo (SAN), the Governor approved the release order on the 28th of December 2022 to celebrate the New Year.

He furthered that the prerogative of Mercy is in tune with the provisions of Section 212 (1) & (2) of the 1999 Constitution of The Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).

The Commissioner for Justice maintained that the prerogative of mercy followed due diligence and applicable guidelines.

Onigbanjo, however, stressed that the nature of the offence, period of incarceration, age, health and behavioural conduct of the inmates among others as provided by correctional authorities formed parts of parameters for the council’s recommendation.

“The approval for the release of the inmates is in line with the commitment of Mr. Governor to decongest correctional facilities in Lagos State as part of the Justice Sector Reforms”, Onigbanjo stated.
