The Libyan Football Federation, LFF, has explained the delay experienced by Nigeria’s Super Eagles at Al Abraq International Airport, attributing it to routine air traffic and logistical issues rather than intentional foul play.
In a statement released on Monday via X, the LFF clarified that the flight diversion was not a hostile act.
They dismissed claims of sabotage and noted that the Libyan team faced similar challenges during their recent trip to Nigeria for an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.
The LFF explained that the Nigerian team’s ValueJet flight was diverted to Al Abraq due to air traffic control and security protocols, common in international travel.
They stressed that such delays, while unfortunate, are routine and not a deliberate attempt to cause trouble.
The federation reaffirmed its respect for Nigeria and expressed concern for the stranded team but noted that logistical problems happen in global sports events.
They highlighted Libya’s tradition of hospitality and called for resolving the matter through mutual understanding, underscoring football’s role in promoting unity.
Meanwhile, the Nigeria Football Federation has lodged a formal complaint with the Confederation of African Football and is working to bring the Super Eagles home after being stranded for over 15 hours.
