Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, announced on Saturday, that his administration will begin paying the N70,000 minimum wage once negotiations on consequential salary adjustments are finalized.

This was disclosed in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media, Sulaimon Olanrewaju, in Ibadan.

Makinde also extended the N25,000 wage award for workers and the N15,000 for pensioners for an additional three months. He explained that these payments will continue until the wage negotiation process is complete, at which point the new minimum wage will be implemented.

“Negotiations on the minimum wage will start next week. We are committed to paying the N70,000 minimum wage, but the consequential adjustment still needs to be discussed with the NLC,” the governor said.

Makinde also praised the state’s teachers for their support during the last election and their contributions to the development of the state. He emphasized that his administration will continue to prioritize the welfare of teachers and civil servants, as education is a key focus of his government.

He highlighted plans to improve educational infrastructure and ensure a better environment for teaching, committing to increasing spending on education from N3 billion per year to at least N10 billion annually to close the gap in infrastructure needs.

While commissioning a block of 10 classrooms built by the Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT, Makinde reiterated his administration’s commitment to fixing inner roads, including those within the Owode Housing Estate.

NUT Chairman, Raji Ismail, thanked the governor for his achievements in education and his focus on teachers’ welfare, including regular salary payments, promotions, and healthcare support.
