The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has imposed a N2,000,000 penalty on Arise Television over report that INEC has launched an investigation into a case of criminal forfeiture against the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Bola Ahmed Tinubu during his time in the United States of America.
The sanction was announced in a press statement signed by the Director General of the commission, Balarabe Shehu on Monday, November 14.
The commission, said the station has contravened Section 5.1.3 of the National Broadcasting Code and thereby incurred the fine of Two Million Naira (N2,000,000) to be paid within two weeks of receipt of the letter, otherwise the station will face a stiffer punishment.
It would be recalled that the station, on November 12, 2022 broadcast a press statement signed by Festus Okoye Esq. the National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee of the National Independent Electoral Commission (INEC).
The press release alleged that INEC is investigating the use of forfeiture by a US court against the former Lagos State Governor, with a view to prosecution.
INEC, however, debunked the press statement, thereby tagging it as FAKE NEWS.
The commission described the news by Arise Television as an unfortunate breach of National Broadcasting Code and gross display of unprofessionalism and insensitivity.
