NDLEA destroys 7,286kgs illicit substance in Edo forest

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, has destroyed 7,286 Kilograms of Skunk and five hectares of its plantation in Ujiogba Forest Reserve in Esan West LGA, Edo State.

According to a press statement signed by spokesperson of the agency, Femi Babafemi on Thursday, February 23, operatives of NDLEA were involved in a serious gun duel with the armed guards of the drug syndicate but the hoodlums were later subdued by the superior force of the agency’s Tactical Team.

The operation led to the discovery of 100 jumbo bags of cannabis sativa weighing 3.2 tons; 5,000 bags of cannabis weighing 65 tons; and 137 bags of cannabis seeds weighing 4.66 tons, totaling 72.86 tons. Seven bags of cannabis and one bag of its seeds inside a big warehouse constructed with wood and zinc.

The illicit drugs, stuffed inside hundred of jumbo bags in a warehouse in the forest were kept for onward distribution to various destinations within the country ahead of the forthcoming general elections.

The statement further said part of the hard drugs were taken out of the warehouse for further investigation and prosecution of suspects as the rest were burnt to ashes.

At the end of the strike, two rifles pent cartridges of short guns and an empty shell of AK47 rifle were recovered while a 24-year-old suspect, Calvary Essien, was arrested.
