Kwara state command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, on Saturday counselled players and employees of Kwara United Football Club on the negative health effects of illicit substance abuse.
The state commander, CN Fatimoh Abiola Popoola, speaking during the sensitisation programme, disclosed that the dangers in substance abuse include: infertility, cardiovascular diseases, and premature death.
The commander, therefore, admonished the players to shun self-medication and seek medical prescription from the club’s doctor, charging them to exhibit exceptional discipline and diligence for which athletes are reputed.
The club general manager, Bashir Badawiy, lauded Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for his continuous support, expressing his delight at the partnership between NDLEA and Kwara United Football Club.
He maintained that the programme equipped the club with comprehensive knowledge of drug regulations.
Ace broadcaster Mallam Hammed Adio, in his remark, reiterated the need for a partnership between the Kwara Sports Commission and the NDLEA to counsel athletes periodically on drug abuse.
He implored Kwara United players to train hard and follow in the footprints of successful sports legends such as Rashidi Yekini and Muda Lawal.
The event ended with the exchange of souvenirs between Kwara United and the NDLEA, while NDLEA boss announced Bashir Badawiy as NDLEA ambassador and was decorated with the agency’s badge
