Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago has described a boat mishap that led to the death of several passengers in communities between Jebba and Kainji Dam in Mokwa Local Government Area of state as a great shock.
Bago made this known thruugh a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim.
He also stressed the importance the importance of the use of life jackets when boarding boats, warning residents against overcrowding boats.
Bago said the development was terrible and undesirable.
“This is quite a shocking and sorrowful situation to the people of the affected communities and I share in their sorrow. I pray that Allah will grant the deceased Aljannah Firdausi,” the governor said.
While consoling the families of the victims, Bago directed the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) to take measures to make life better for the people.
The governor prayed that Allah would comfort the families of the deceased and grant quick recovery to those injured.
The exact number of casualties has not been ascertained as at press time, It was reported that the boat was transporting about 100 passengers from adjoining communities to New Gbajibo Resettlement when the disaster occurred.
Both marine police and local divers, in collaboration with NSEMA is ongoing are making an effort regarding further discovery of more casualties.
