The outgoing Nigeria President, Muhammadu Buhari has said the neighbouring country, Niger Republic will not hesitate to defend his administration when he eventually leaves office in May 29.

Buhari will hand over the affairs of the country to the President-elect, Bola Tinubu, on Monday, May 29, 2023.

President Buhari said his administration has over the years enjoyed a cordial relationship with Niger Republic.

The president further noted that if Nigerians allow insurgency to resurface in the country after handing over powe to the incoming administration, Niger will defend him.

Buhari stated this during the inauguration of the Nigeria Customs Service Corporate Headquarters in Abuja, on Tuesday.

He also stressed that he would retire to his hometown in Daura, which is far away from Abuja but closer to the Niger Republic.

“I said these few things about my personal belief because I have only six more days to go.

“And I try to plan to be as far away from Abuja as possible. I came from an area that is far away from Abuja.

“I said if anybody with force moves, I have a good relationship with my neighbours. Niger people will defend me,” Buhari said.

It would be recalled that president Buhari on Tuesday, February 9, 2023 performed a virtual groundbreaking ceremony for the Kano – Maradi standard gauge rail line.

Buhari said the $1.96 billion rail project would improve importation and exportion of goods for Niger Republic and other nations in the sub-sahara region through Nigerian ports.

“The project, when completed, would serve import and export of goods for Niger Republic and other countries in the sub-region through Nigerian ports. The country would earn revenue through expansion of trade and commerce, while the people of Niger Republic will benefit from ease of transportation logistics at affordable cost in their import and export business,” the president said.
