Former Osun State Commissioner for Information, Sunday Akere, has revealed that Adegboyega Oyetola, Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, would defeat the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the next governorship poll if the All Progressives Congress, APC, nominates him.
Speaking in Osogbo on Thursday during a programme organized by the Osun State chapter of the League of Veteran Journalists, Akere disclosed that Oyetola is the best choice for the APC in 2026.
He expressed conviction that Oyetola’s outstanding performance as the former governor would give him an edge if chosen again.
Akere refuted allegations that Oyetola’s administration was anti-worker, stating that during his 48-month tenure, no protests occurred.
He maintained that Oyetola paid bursaries to 3,100 students without making a fuss and managed state resources effectively, unlike the current administration, which he claimed is spending excessively without delivering better results.
“If Oyetola is chosen in 2026, he will defeat the PDP easily,” Akere said, adding that Oyetola never interfered in the leadership decisions of tertiary institutions and accused the current government of poor project quality at inflated costs.
In response, Osun PDP’s Director of Media and Publicity, Oladele Bamiji, dismissed Akere’s claims, asserting that Governor Ademola Adeleke and the PDP would defeat any APC candidate in 2026.
Bamiji said that Adeleke’s administration has gained public acceptance through its performance.
“Whoever they present in 2026, Governor Adeleke and the PDP will win convincingly,” Bamiji said.
He criticized Akere’s comparison of state revenues, noting that the current high fuel prices, caused by the APC-led federal government, have affected value of allocations.
Bamiji also defended the quality of projects under Adeleke’s administration.
