Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino explained the reason behind his choice of Reece James as the team’s new captain.

James took over from Cesar Azpilicueta, who left the club after spending about 11 years at Stamford Bridge.

Azpilicueta will be plying his trade in the Spanish league this coming season after committing his future to Atletico Madrid.

Reece James who wore the captainship armband during Chelsea’s pre-season tour, has now become the team’s new permanent leader.

“This is a decision taken by me and the club. We are very pleased Reece will captain the side this season.

“He leads by example, and his attitude and dedication to Chelsea has been clear throughout pre-season. He proudly wore the armband during our summer tour and will take up the challenge of leading our squad with his own approach and ideas,” Pochettino said.
