The Executive Governor of Sokoto State, Ahmad Aliyu on Monday, June 2023 took health workers at the State Specialist Hospital by surprise after he paid a visit to the hospital without prior notice.
The reason for the unscheduled visit was asses the quality of health service delivery by the medical centre.
Press Secretary to the governor, Abubakar Bawa made the revelation on Monday in the state capital.
The spokesperson noted that the governor intentionally visited the edifice unannounced following continuous complaints from citizens of the state over poor health service delivery.
Bawa further highlighted dilapidated structures, unstable power supply, shortage of workers and lack of functional medical equipment, among others as some of the reason the governor visited the hospital.
He maintained Governor Aliyu disguised his identified and purposefully visited the hospital in a tricycle so as to have unfettered access to first-class information from its workers.
The statement revealed, ”I was surprised with what I saw during my visit to the hospital which lasted for four hours; it afforded me opportunity to see things for myself.
”Patients and their relatives are subjected to all kinds of hazardous situations owing to dirty environment and lack of functional equipment in the medical facility.
”Patients’ relatives rely solely on alternative sources of power due to erratic electricity supply in the hospital.
”I have directed the management of the hospital to see me for further discussions on how to remedy the situation,” Mr Bawa quoted the governor as saying.
A senior officer of the hospital confirmed to the News Agency of Nigeria that the inability of the previous governments to provide sufficient funds for the hospital contributed to its current poor state.
Governor Aliyu’s action has got a lot of people talking, stirring series of reactions on the internet in the political circle, since the report broke on Monday.
