President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has charged the media to hold public officials accountable in order to improve Nigeria’s democracy.

Tinubu, who was represented by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris gave the advice at the 20th All Nigeria Editors Conference in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.

He noted that government and media should forge mutual relationship in their roles.

“In any thriving democracy, the media must hold officials accountable to strengthen democracy, not undermine it. This important work must occur within a framework of mutual respect and collaboration,” Tinubu stated, noting that both entities share a commitment to public service.

Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri described the media historical role as a “beacon of hope” and essential for unity and transparency.

He said that integrity is important in journalism’s impact on democracy.
