The federal government said it is proposing the use of concrete roads in place of asphalt surfaces due to cost-effectiveness and durability.
The Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, stated that concrete roads would last for about 50 years before it began to deteriorate.
The former governor of Ebonyi State made statement in Akure, Ondo State capital.
He explained that the decision by the federal government to embrace concrete technology is to have effective optimising infrastructure investments across the country.
Umahi, while on inspection visit to Akure-Ado Ekiti road, noted that all ongoing road projects across the country that are not more than 20 percent done, will be converted to concrete pavement.
“A very important thing that I must let you know is the issue of the introduction of concrete technology on our roads.
“My argument is that you see a lot of roads that are built on concrete with a shelf life of 50 years.
“Not only that, you find out that we are having so much pressure on the Naira; the importation of bitumen is putting a lot of pressure on the Naira, so cement has a local content; almost everything we need is not produced in Nigeria.”
