Irate youths at Ikyve in the Konshisha Local Government of Benue State have reportedly taken the law into their hands as they allegedly bury two men accused of witchcraft.
The two men were said to be behind a thunder strike at Ikyve in the community, a man identified as Henry Ihwakaa alongside his wife and a child dead on Saturday.
Irritated, the youths in the community came out in their teeming population went for the father of the alleged thunder victim, Ihwakaa alongside another man said to be an accomplice and buried them alive.
While confirming the incident on Monday, the state Police Public Relations Office, SP Sewuese Anene, maintained that “it is true but one person was buried alive.”
The two suspects have since been arrested and police have launched investigation into the matter.
Baba Agan, a concerned community leader in the area, claimed to have alerted the Tse Agbaragba Police Station.
According to him, the two men had already died before the arrival of the policemen.
It was learnt that when a police team arrived at the scene, the two victims had already died in the grave and their remains were excavated.
However, Police spokesperson, warned members of the public against taking the law into their hands, thereby imploring disgruntled youths to always refer cases of misunderstanding to the police to take necessary actions.
According to her: “The elderly man was buried alive because it was being alleged that a young man, his wife and two-month-old child died from lightning.
“It was alleged that it was the man doing witchcraft that brought the lightning. They went and buried him alive and he died. Police are investigating; we have arrested two people already.”
