The Association Kwara Online Media Practitioners (ASKOMP) has expressed strong support for the Publisher of NupekoTV, Tauheed Mohammed who was arraigned in court on an allegation defamation of character against Kwara State Commissioner for Water Resources, Hon Usman Yunusa Lade.
ASKOMP chairman, Salihu Shola Taofeek on Friday said that the Association is making moves to ensure that Mr Tauheed Mohammed regains freedom.
According to him, the Publisher of NupekoTV, Tauheed Mohammed was remanded in Oke Kura Correctional Centre, Ilorin on Wednesday, October 15, 2025 following criminal charges filed by the Kwara Commissioner in spite of the ongoing civil case by the same complainant.
ASKOMP, while maintaining that every citizen has the righ to seek legal redress as done by Mr Usman Yunusa Lade, seeking N10million in compensation over report published by NupekoTV in September 2024, however condemned the fresh criminal charges filed by the Commissioner.
His words: “ASKOMP maintains its position by condemning systematic attempt of highly placed individuals to intimidate and harass journalists by using the defamation law. It’s unfortunate that the honourable Commissioner filed both civil and criminal charges against NupekoTV Publisher simultaneously. The Association is currently engaging parties involved to facilitate prompt and amicable resolution.”
The Chairman said the association will desist from upholding a high-level of professionalism, objectivity and international best practices.
The Association, therefore, demanded the abolition of the section of the law, which is being used as a tool to persecute journalists.
